Prerequisites for Admission

The applicants must:

  1. Hold the equivalent training package units provided by an approved training provider. You will need to provide evidence of this by submitting your transcript with all the units required. Therefore you must have completed a Certificate IV and
  2. You must have an appropriate log of walks equivalent to BLSA requirements for that level and you must also demonstrate your currency of walks in the last 3 years.
  3. Provide a supporting letter from your employer or supervisor that can verify your log book.
  4. Be over the age of 18 years.
  5. Hold a current remote area first aid certificate or higher certificate such as remote or wilderness first aid.
  6. You may be required to provide a evidence of your DCSI clearance.

Additional Assessment if required

Based on the units you have completed and the extent of your log will determine if an additional assessment is required to complete either level.

For example a Diploma level graduate may need to complete a group management assessment walk with a BLSA advisor. If the applicant has not completed enough walk units and or logged appropriate assessment walks as a leader.An additional assessment fee may apply if this is the case.

Logbook Requirements

Your Log book must include the following as a minimum.

Your log of experience should reflect at least the following number of walks:

  • 3 x 2-day walk as participant or leader
  • 2 x 3-day walk as participant or leader
  • 3 x 2-day walks as leader
  • 1 x 3-day walk as leader
  • Your group management assessment

The log of walks listed above must contain at least or additional walks need to be logged:

  • 1 trip in cold and wet conditions,
  • 1 trip with an adult club or peer group
  • 1 trip with a school or juvenile group
  • 1 trip in The Grampians or an equivalent venue
  • 1 trip in the Flinders Ranges north of Wilmington

Endorsement

The Board considers that people awarded the Bushwalking Leadership Certificate are capable of leading dependent groups on bushwalks satisfying the following criteria:

  1. Length of trip not to exceed 3 days
  2. Walks to be undertaken mainly on defined tracks or walking trails, and
  3. Parties to be within a half-day walk of outside help or assistance in case of emergencies
